A few days ago when my sites were hacked, I by coincidence ran across this thread at the Warrior Forum. In a nutshell, it was pointed out that some hosts have the "Anonymous FTP" setting enabled by default. I checked mine, and sure enough, they were (I'm with Host Gator).
I have no way of knowing whether that was where the security breach occurred, but in any case, I quickly went through all my accounts and disabled the setting. Here's how to do it in cPanel:
Log into your hosting account's cPanel by typing in your domain followed by /cpanel. For example, http://yourdomain.com/cpanel. Drop down to the Files section and click on the Anonymous FTP icon.
You need to uncheck the boxes that allow anonymous access. Make sure to hit Save Settings afterward.
This isn't the only line of defense against hackers, but it's one quick thing you can check on as part of your overall strategy to keep them out. Some hosts have this disabled by default, and hopefully more will in the future.

Fabulous! Easy and quick. Mine was checked too so I have just unchecked it. Thank you!
